How We Feed Our Gliders

A brief run through of how we feed our sugar gliders here at The Sugar Glider Adventure.

Currently we feed Original HPW (which is very much not the same thing as HPW Complete, HPW Plus, HPW Instant, or any of the others) with frozen chopped fruits and veggies, and frozen blended fruits and veggies.

We currently have fourteen sugar gliders of our own, plus a few that we are glider sitting for a friend – so we have to make food in a relatively large quantity without compromising quality. I wanted to take a moment to explain how we’ve done that.

The first two photos show the chopped fruits and veggies (which, this week, consisted of frozen broccoli, frozen green beans, frozen peas, fresh grapes, frozen red, yellow and green peppers, the stems of fresh bok choy, frozen white corn, and fresh cucumbers) in a large bowl, where we mix everything thoroughly. Then we take a days worth of that (which equals out to one tablespoon per glider, as per the HPWO diet), and put that in tupperware and freeze it. That way, each night we have one night’s worth of chopped foods already sectioned off and ready to feed.

The third and fourth photos show the blended fruits and veggies (this week was frozen red, yellow and green peppers, fresh cucumbers, fresh strawberries, greek yogurt, fresh bok choy leaves, tomato, and a bit of 100% pomegranate-blueberry juice) before they were fully blended. The reason we do this is because some things just don’t freeze well in chunks, and this gives us an opportunity to also incorporate things that they might not eat on their own (for example, most of mine cannot stand bananas, so sometimes I blend them in so no one notices!). Once blended, we then spoon one tablespoon of the blended fruits and vegetables into an ice cube tray. Then we make HPWO, following the recipe, and spoon one and one half teaspoons on top of each cube of blended fruits and veggies, as shown in the fourth photo.

That way each glider gets one cube of HPWO and blended fruits and veggies, and one tablespoon of chopped fruits and veggies. Usually we make food in one or two week increments.
